Wix vs WordPress for Small Businesses: Costs, SEO and Ownership

September 26, 2026
Wix and WordPress website concepts beside a calculator, magnifying glass and key, illustrating costs, SEO and ownership.

Wix is often a practical choice for a small business that wants a website builder with hosting and platform updates handled together. Self-hosted WordPress is often the better fit when you need more control over custom features, hosting and future migrations. Both can support SEO; neither guarantees rankings or leads.

The right choice depends on what your website must do, who will maintain it and how much flexibility you need as your business grows.

In this comparison, “WordPress” means the open-source software available from WordPress.org, installed with a hosting provider you choose. WordPress.com is a separate hosted service with its own plans.

Wix vs WordPress at a glance

Factor Wix Self-hosted WordPress
Getting started Website builder and hosting in one service Choose hosting, a theme and the features you need
Running costs Site subscription plus relevant extras Hosting, domain and any paid tools or support
SEO Built-in settings for common SEO tasks Core features plus plugins, code and hosting control
Maintenance Wix manages its platform and infrastructure Responsibilities depend on your host and support arrangement
Custom functionality Work within available platform tools and integrations Extend through plugins and custom development
Moving providers A standard Wix site cannot simply be moved intact to another host Files and database can be migrated to compatible hosting

Costs: compare the full annual bill

A low starting price is only useful if it includes the features your business needs.

Compare the first year and the renewal year separately. Include your own time, professional help and future changes alongside subscription charges.

What to budget for with Wix

Wix’s standard website plans include Light, Core, Business and Business Elite. Light supports a basic branded website with a custom domain; accepting payments requires an appropriate higher plan, such as Core or Business.

Your budget may include:

  • The website subscription.
  • Domain renewal after any introductory voucher.
  • Business email.
  • Paid apps or additional marketing tools.
  • Design, content and ongoing professional help.
  • Payment-processing charges if you sell online.

Prices vary by location and billing term. An advertised monthly equivalent for an annual subscription may require the full year’s payment upfront.

For a Canadian business, confirm the currency, applicable taxes, renewal price and included features at checkout. A first-year domain offer does not make future domain renewals free.

What to budget for with WordPress

The WordPress software is free and distributed under an open-source licence. Operating a business website still involves costs.

Budget for hosting, a domain, any paid theme or plugins, and the maintenance work your chosen providers do not include. Business email, development, content and payment processing may add further costs.

Managed hosting can reduce technical work, but check the actual service scope. “Managed” does not automatically mean that every plugin issue, content change or custom feature is included.

An illustrative annual budget

These hypothetical Canadian-dollar figures demonstrate the calculation. They are not current Wix prices, HMDIA quotes or market averages.

Annual expense Wix example WordPress example
Site subscription or hosting CAD $35 × 12 = $420 CAD $25 × 12 = $300
Additional apps or paid site tools $120 $180
Domain renewal $25 $25
Illustrative subtotal $565 $505

Both subtotals exclude tax, email, design, content, maintenance labour and payment fees. If a support arrangement costs an additional CAD $50 monthly, add $600 annually wherever it is not already included.

The useful question is: What will it cost to run the same required website on each platform?

SEO: both platforms require a strategy

Wix supports editable page titles, meta descriptions, indexing settings and structured data. WordPress offers SEO capabilities that can be extended through plugins and development.

The difference is how you implement and maintain your strategy.

Wix brings many settings into its own interface. WordPress gives your team more choices across plugins, templates, server configuration and custom code. Those choices help only when someone uses them well.

Google’s SEO Starter Guide focuses on helping search engines understand content and helping people find useful information. Choosing a platform does not replace that work.

For either platform, prioritise:

  • Useful pages that explain your services and answer customer questions.
  • Clear navigation, descriptive headings and relevant internal links.
  • Accessible, readable content and working mobile forms.
  • Efficient images and a usable page experience.
  • Public pages that search engines can access and index.

A WordPress site can perform poorly when overloaded with unsuitable plugins or heavy layouts. A Wix site can underperform when its content is thin or its services are unclear.

Choose the platform your team can keep useful and well maintained.

What about AI search?

Google’s guidance for generative AI search says established SEO practices remain relevant. It does not require special AI-specific structured data.

Publish clear service information, original examples and answers that help customers make decisions. Keep business details accurate and support important claims with evidence.

Neither a website builder nor an SEO plugin guarantees inclusion in Google’s AI features or recommendations from other AI services.

Ownership: separate your content from your platform

Ownership involves several different questions:

  1. Who controls the domain and account?
  2. Who can access the website and its data?
  3. Can the working website move to another provider?
  4. What rights and licences apply to its design, content and tools?

With Wix

Wix states that the content you build belongs to you, but its standard website depends on Wix’s proprietary infrastructure.

You cannot simply export the complete working site and host it elsewhere. Moving to another platform generally means rebuilding its layout and functionality and transferring the content and data you need.

That is a portability limitation, not a reason to claim that Wix owns everything you publish.

With WordPress

Self-hosted WordPress allows a complete installation to move between compatible hosting providers. WordPress’s migration documentation explains the role of website files, the database and configuration changes.

Portability still needs planning. Replacing a theme or page builder can require design work, and paid tools may have separate renewal or support terms.

Also, a content export is not the same as a complete site backup. Confirm that your backup arrangement covers both files and the database.

An ownership checklist for either platform

Before approving a project, confirm that:

  • Your business controls the domain registration and recovery email.
  • You have appropriate owner or administrator access.
  • You can access analytics and Search Console.
  • The agreement explains content rights, licences and ongoing charges.
  • You understand what can be exported or transferred.
  • The handover process is documented if you change providers.

Ask these questions before launch, while responsibilities are easy to clarify.

Maintenance: decide who does the work

Wix handles its platform updates and hosting infrastructure. Your business still needs to manage account security, content accuracy, subscriptions and customer enquiries.

With WordPress, assign responsibility for core, theme and plugin updates, backups, security monitoring and recovery. Some tasks may be handled by your host or maintenance provider.

WordPress recommends backups before updates in its updating guidance. A backup is useful only if someone knows how to restore it.

For either option, ask your provider:

  • Who responds if the website stops working?
  • Are forms and payment flows checked after important changes?
  • How is a failed update or accidental edit recovered?
  • Which support tasks cost extra?

Which platform fits your small business?

Consider Wix when:

  • You want a relatively straightforward website with fewer hosting decisions.
  • Its available features meet your actual requirements.
  • Your team prefers one main platform interface.
  • You accept the rebuilding work involved in leaving the platform later.

A local service business needing a small website, enquiries and straightforward bookings may find this arrangement practical.

Consider WordPress when:

  • You need custom content types, workflows or integrations.
  • You want more choice over hosting and technical implementation.
  • Your website is expected to evolve beyond its initial scope.
  • You can assign maintenance to a capable person or provider.

For example, a business planning a resource library, detailed product catalogue and custom quotation workflow should investigate flexibility early.

Before deciding, test the important customer journey: finding a service, completing a form and receiving a response. HMDIA’s lead generation landing page examples can help you define that journey.

If your current site attracts visitors but few enquiries, investigate why website traffic does not become leads before assuming a platform change will solve it.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress cheaper than Wix?

It can be, but there is no universal winner. Compare equivalent features, renewal charges and the work needed to operate the website. Free software does not mean free hosting or maintenance.

What are the main disadvantages of Wix?

The main trade-offs to assess are dependence on its hosting platform, the cost of required plans and extras, and whether its available tools fit your future needs.

Can I move from Wix to WordPress without losing rankings?

No migration can promise unchanged rankings. Preserve valuable content, map old URLs to appropriate new pages, implement redirects and test the new site. Google’s site-migration guidance explains the preparation involved and possible temporary ranking fluctuations.

Choose around your business requirements

Choose Wix when a managed platform meets your needs and simplifies website administration. Choose self-hosted WordPress when flexibility and portability justify the additional decisions and maintenance arrangements.
